Asset Prestarts (also known as Plant Checks, Machinery Prestarts, Vehicle Checklists, or Inspections) are checks completed by staff before or during the use of an asset. They ensure - Health & Safety requirements are met, Assets are operating efficiently, Downtime is reduced and finally Workshop and maintenance time is optimised.
When are Prestarts Required?
Prestarts can be configured based on:
- Recurring Intervals - Daily, Weekly, Fortnightly & Monthly
- Usage-Based - After every set number of operating hours (e.g. every 10, 50, or 100 hours)
This ensures assets are checked both regularly and based on actual usage.
How Prestarts Work
- The user completing the prestart is automatically recorded based on their login
- The date and time of submission are automatically captured
- A valid asset recorded in 3PM must be selected when completing a prestart
- If applicable, WOF/COF and Rego expiry dates are displayed (read-only)
Meter Readings (Optional)
Each Asset Class can define which meter readings are required, such as: Hubo, Odometer (Odo) and Hours (Hrs).
When an asset is selected:
- The system automatically identifies its Asset Class
- The relevant meter fields are displayed for completion
Prestart Questions
Each Asset Class has its own set of questions.
For example:
- Excavators - hydraulics, tracks, bucket condition
- Light Vehicles - tyre pressure, oil level, lights
These questions must all be answered when submitting a prestart for assets within that class.
See article: How to Create Prestart Questions
What Happens After Submission
- The prestart is saved against the asset within the system
- Any issues identified be will be logged as faults and can be used to trigger maintenance or follow-up actions
- This provides a complete history of checks and supports compliance and asset management.
Summary
Asset Prestarts are a key part of managing assets effectively by:
- Ensuring safety compliance
- Catching issues early
- Maintaining accurate usage and condition records
- Supporting better maintenance planning
